Internet security messages and certificates – what to do

(To print a pdf of this information please click here)

Why am I getting a warning when I download a program from Class Legal?

Class Legal, along with all other software companies, 'digitally sign' their programs using certificates issued by Symantec. This lets Windows know that the Publisher is safe and that the executable file should not cause any harm.

Until 1st January 2016 Class Legal used SHA1 certification, which meant that all programs signed before that date would not invoke a security warning for all Windows versions from Vista and above.

After that date, as per Symantec's instructions, all our new programs have to be signed with SHA2 certification (if they were still signed with SHA1 then a message 'Signature of this program is corrupt or invalid' would appear.)

Some versions of Windows don't accept this new certificate automatically – see below for what you need to do.

1. What to do if you get this purple screen warning (possible for any version of Windows, but most likely to be Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2 users)

a. If you get the following screen when you try to run your program click on 'More info':

b. Click on 'Run anyway':

c. Your installation program will run as normal.

2. How to stop getting the purple screen warning

a. Windows Vista or Server 2008 users

i. Before downloading the program install the Windows patch found here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2763674.

ii. Then download the executable as normal.

iii. If you still receive the warning, then follow the instructions in 'What to do if you get this purple screen warning' above for how to run the program anyway.

iv. See 'Check your security settings' below for other reasons why you are still getting the warning, and suggestions to resolve it.

b. Windows 7/Server 2008 R2

i. Before downloading the program install the Windows hotfix – information about it and links to it are found here: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/2949927. (Note that if you have auto-updates turned on for all types of updates this should have installed automatically.)

ii. If you still receive the warning, then then follow the instructions in 'What to do if you get this purple screen warning' above for how to run the program anyway.

iii. See 'Check your security settings' below for other reasons why you are still getting the warning, and suggestions to resolve it.

c. Check your security settings

i. Ask your IT department about what security settings they have chosen for your computer - they may have set it so you cannot download executable files at all, or can only download certain executable files from certain sites.

ii. In order to view/change your security settings:

Click on Control Panel / Internet Security and select the ‘Security’ tab.

It will look something like this:

iii. You might find it helps if you add www.classlegal.com to 'Trusted sites'.

iv. Many other Windows security settings plus your virus checker can interfere with the downloading process. Ask your IT department for advice.
